Lau Pa Sat Festival Market

When people talk about Lau Pa Sat, what coems to mind is a fantastic looking structure that is well lit.. Food that is available 24 hours a day and most importantly.. the most number of Satay stalls in any hawker center.
Located near the Raffles place MRT, this Hawker center is housed in a building that was build during 1894, the structure is beautiful and the Singapore Government has already made it a protected strucure.
This place is frequented by tourist as local usually bring guests here as it is near the CBD and the City proper and very accessible.
At night the place just liven up with the numerous Satay stalls justling for customers.
Ordered few peices of chicken and mutton satay -

to be honest, i was a bit disappointed, the mutton peices were not as tender as i hope for and the chicken was a bit dry.. maybe the big volume of customers is taking a toll in the quality of their food.
Mee Goreng-
this was just okay lah.. nothing great
Sugar cane with lime-
the best thirst quencher for a hot humid night.. perfect with the food.

Bao Inn - ABC Brickworks

ABC Brickworks have this little stall that makes their own paos on the spot. Everythign is steam in the premises. Got myself a Char siu bao. And a chicken pao- both for 60 cents a piece.
The charsiu bao has mince pork inside,
I would have like it if the pork was not mince so fine, I like bigger dice where you can feel the meat strands when you bite into it.
The chicken pao was good,, juicy and moist inside and the seasoning was just perfect.
Another Stop- GogoBeanZ- yuou can find in a lot of hawker centers

Soy milk with grass jelly- I thought this combination would not really work to my liking, but I was glad to be wrong It was good and very refreshing.

SHANGHAI CHEE CHEONG FUN - Chinatown Complex Food Center

Shanghai Chee Cheong Fen
Chinatown Complex Food Centre
#02-174
335 Smith Street Singapore 050335
Chee Cheong Fun is always fun to eat. As a side dish to a good meal. Chinatown Complex houses one of the better chee cheong fun, they make it at this stall, though not made to orde each time. They tend to make it by batches and keep it warm in a steel refrigerator like appliance
Ordered the Char Siew Chee cheong Fun- I find the cheong fun wrapper a but thick, as I love my chee cheong fun wrapper more relax looking and not so stiff, I like the the sauces they doused the cheong fun with though, like their chili sauce and sweet and salty thick soy sauce that just suit the cheong fun very well.

Heng Ji Chicken Rice - Chinatown

A lot of votes went to this place during Dr. Leslie Tay’s chicken rice polls, and I don’t wonder why. This is the most queued chicken rice stall in Chinatown Complex.
Ordered myself a 3 dollar potion and this is what I got. The rice was very fragrant and tasty but I don’t like the rice they used as it crumbled easily
, either its overcooked or the rice quality was poor. The chicken however was good. Moist but not as moist as Tian-Tian.
They also make their own chili sauce, as u can see, they make it a bit darker.

Maxwell Fuzhou Oyster Cake - Maxwell food Center

I grew up only knowing of Orh Chian as the way Oyster Cake or Oyster Omellete is. Not knowing there is another way of cooking Oysters. Here it is done when the batter is placed in a large ladle putting oysters and prawn inside then ladleing another layer of batter on top and deep frying it until it become an UFO or an Unidentified Fried Object.
Price at 2.00SGD a single cake is fried till crispy, keeping the inside still moist. There were a few oyster and a prawn insde.
It tasted a bit like a corndog.. but seafood flavor. Hahaha. A bit oily if you ask me, I think good to eat with rice rather than munching on it alone. a bti on the pricey side but still a lovely snack.

Hainan Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee - Golden Mile Food Complex

There are a few questions when it comes to hokkien mee, like “Char Kway Teow” it boils down to are u a person who likes it dry or wet? Do u like thick noodles or thin noodles?
In Golden Mile Food Center, this hokkien mee is the most talked about. Cooked by a man in goggles, because he was told that he might lose his eyesight if he continues to cook and the option was to cooked with goggles.

This is the dry type of Hokkien mee and uses a mixture of thin and thick noodles. I am not really fond of dry hokkien mee, because sometimes the taste is not as intense.
Otherwise, this one tasted good, not great, but good. The stock used was very fragrant and no fishy smell or taste. The sambal blended with the noodles very well .
Give it a try if you are craving for hokkien mee and you happen to be in the Golden Mile area

Hill Street Fried Kway Teow- Chinatown Complex

No guys this isn’t the one in Bedok, this Is in Chinatown complex food center. Thinking that having the same name as the one in bedok, the taste should not be far right? This is the 2.50SGD
Too bad, this fails in comparison to the one in Bedok. The noodles were overcooked and mushy. It was more sweet than savory.
But it was better than the one in Tiong Bahru

Tiong Bahru Wanton Noodles

This place doesn’t really have a proper English name. But just go there during lunch time and look for one of the longest queue and you wont miss this place.
What makes this wanton mee different from the others? I have read in some blogs that their “char siu” is much mucb better than the usual char siu from a regular wanton place. So I ordered a 3 dollar plate and here is what I got
Dry noodles with slices of charsiu; veggies; sambal, a bowl of soup with wantons.

The sauce they mixed up on the bottom of the noodles was very fragrant and savory. I don’t know exactly what they mixed, but I just couldn’t help but keep on eating the noodles as it coats each strands. The noodles itself was cooked to “QQ” perfection.
The Charsiu was not really the char siu I expect from other blogs I read, it was a bit fatter a bit more moist.. but I expected more. The wantons were the usual small ones with mix of mince pork and fish.
Overall, I like the noodles, the charsiu was a bit better but not outstandingly good.

Tuck Kee (Ipoh) San Ho Fun

>

I have heard legends about IPOH cuisine being the best cuisine in Malaysia.. but don’t tell that to the people from PENANG. Hahahah
Here in Singapore there are a few places offering Ipoh food and I chanced upon this place in Hong Lim with a very long queue.. so it must be good right? It is not that cheap to deserve a long queue so the other assumption would be it must be really good.
On the display window showed the rice noodles they used and pasted there are the wards they got and the pictures of the food they serve.

Ordered myself a 5.00SGD portion; it looked so good. With the prawns and crayfish and thick gravy And indeed it was good.
The prawn and crayfish was freshly cooked and tasted sweet… not dessert/candy sweet but savory sweet, The gravy just hugs each strand of ho fun and was also very nice. Truly one of the best Ho fun I have tasted here in Singapore

Tiong Bahru Fried Kway Teow

Every Hawker center has a famous Char Kway Teow stall to boast of. And here in Tiong Bahu food center, this is the place. I loke this hawker center because, the design is not too crowded. Its Spacious, and windy, being located in a second floor and the design.. the middle is hollowed out so air can circulate easily.
Here is the stall and the old man who has been cooking it for more than 40 years i think. So what do i think of this Char Kway Teow.

This is the 3.00SGD plate. It has lots of ingredients and quite ample for the price.
I would have love it if it was cooked more though to give it more of the smoky "char" taste. Nevertheless this Char Kway teow does deserve being named after the hawker center.

Best Hainanese Chicken Rice???

Who deserves to get my first post about Singapore food. I was thinking of a lot of things.. Chili crab? Char Kway Teow? Hokkien Mee? Fish Head Curry? Or Chicken Rice? Well, the most accesible and the most number of Hawker Stall here in the country is a Hainanese Chicken Rice stall.
So my search for the best one is on.. and here is the winner base on my research. Well, Anthony Bourdain also has a huge contribution to it:)
Located in the Central District of Singapore. In Between Chinatown and Tanjong Pagar. Lies MAxwell food Center. And ehre you can find an unassuming Hainanese chicken Ruce stall named TIAN-TIAN.
What maked their chicken rice special.
The Chicken is cooked very well, tender, juicy meat, easily eaten. The Chicken is not so fat also. Just right
The Rice is still top nothc , because it is just cooked so welll that the grains are still intact and not mushy.
The sauces are also self made..except for the sweet thick soy sauce.
Everything was just harmonious.
I envy people who can eat this everyday.
Warning: expect to queue if you are going on peak hours.. also.. they are closed on Mondays
